  • Renewables over Coal in Asia

r87Help us send a technical expert to Sri Lanka in September 2015 to link with environmentalists, experts, NGOs, government and industry leaders to empower them to bring about alternatives to coal. Our project aims to contribute to the wave of interest in clean energy that is building across Asia, and help to neutralise Australian attempts to expand coal markets.

For full project details, go to Asia and Australia against coal, and see our presentation Engaging with climate change by connecting with Asia.

Donate here. We’ve raised over $2,000 already, thanks to many individual donors and our successful Sri Lankan buffet. Our next fund-raiser is a tea and cheese tasting on 24th June – limited to 17 people, so get in quickly.

As CEO of Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE), Stephen BygraveSteven Bygrave cropped

is looking forward to this trip to Sri Lanka. BZE has developed technical plans for Australia to be 100% renewable. Now BZE can take that experience internationally, and work with enthusiastic people in Sri Lanka.

As we raise more funds, similar trips will be organised to other countries in the Asia Pacific. Charlie Wood from 350.org and Cam Walker from Friends of the Earth are also great supporters of this plan.

  • Appeal – Oil spill in Bangladesh

Please help us act on this appeal from BGreen Project founder Fadia Hasan.

In Bangladesh, in December there was an oil spill in the fragile and internationally recognised Sundarbans.

This event focused the minds of participants at the January BGreen conference, which JCJ supported financially.

Can you take appropriate action by Thursday (cut-off date for crowd-funding).

Here is the appeal from Fadia, with relevant links.

    Help us Save the Sundarbans!

We need your full attention and support for this important, compelling cause that could pave the way for reclaiming the beautiful waterways that makes us uniquely Bangladesh.

The BGreen Project is thrilled to be joining up with Scott Smith, Mark Ruffalo and Water Defense to raise money to help with the disaster in the Sundarbans and to develop a long term plan to engage the youth in Bangladesh to preserve and protect the water ways of Bangladesh.

Please help now by donating to the Sundarbans Indiegogo campaign here:  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/water-defense-sundarbans-oil-spill-response/x/9463734

Please make sure that you help us spread the word by reposting this to as many people as you can in your networks. This is time sensitive, so, I, Fadia Hasan, the Founder of The BGreen Project am urging you personally to help us spread the word.

The following videos will better help you understand the work of Mark Ruffalo, Scott Smith, and Water Defense:

Thank you very much in supporting this important cause and there is a lot more to come that will directly involve the youth of Bangladesh and the important role they will play in shaping direct, ongoing, community engaged projects related to this campaign. Stay tuned and stay Green!

    Thanks!!!

    Fadia

  • 2015 The BGreen Project Conference

JCJ supported The BGreen Project conference in Bangladesh in January 2015 after the success of the conference in 2014. We were delighted that Kanchana Weerakoon, then JCJ Vice President and ECO-V President, could attend from Sri Lanka to give a presentation. Similar to the 2014 conference, it brought experts, professionals, climate-concerned citizens, and youth together to address current environmental issues at hand in their communities, brainstorm and propose solutions.

  • End-of-year drinks and climbing the heights

Will you be in Melbourne? Love to see you at the wind-down for Journeys for Climate Justice. Drop in for 9 minutes or 90.

    5pm – 6.30pm, Friday 19th December

Jasper Hotel, 489 Elizabeth Street (city-side of Victoria Market)

We have had a great year, and more is to come for 2015. Our AGM and launch of the website on 23 November went really well. Prof David de Kretser and Dr Colin Long did the launch most ably.

And on a lighter note, Helen and Jack are taking turns on the climbing wall. What better way to finish up after our regular JCJ meeting.

  • Flying this summer? You can empower others

Spare a thought for the people in the countries that we fly to or over on our holidays.

Instead of doing a normal carbon offset, why not direct funds to empowering youth in Bangladesh?

Support the BGreen Project conference to be held in Dhaka in January 2015. Help to train the youth leaders of the future, and empower the people of Bangladesh to act on climate change.

Please tell at least one of the people you know who is flying over this summer period.

Check out our post about this Conference.

Donate on JCJ’s website to directly fund the Conference, or support Kanchana Weerakoon to travel from Sri Lanka for the conference as keynote speaker.

  • Youth gather in Bangladesh

JCJ is calling for financial support for the BGreen Conference in January 2015.

The 2014 conference was a massive success and was attended by 150 people, and successfully built community partnerships among organizations in Bangladesh.

Organisor Fadia Hasan says “Youth is our biggest resource in Bangladesh today and mobilizing them in the direction of responsible environmentalism may be one of the answers for a country that is plagued with acute environmental challenges.”

BGreen is committed to using the youth’s power and vision to the fullesbgreen2t, by providing them the support to carry the project out with dedication and efficacy.

Check out the BGreen Project  Facebook page and website.

This is a really worthwhile project to support.

  • JCJ new members welcome

    JCJ welcomes new members.

JCJ is an inclusive organisation, and we encourage all members to have a say. The AGM will be held in November, and we’ll structure it to allow you to participate if you join.

Membership is $30 per year in Australia and similar countries, and $10 in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and similar countries.

Our rules allow for participation by people no matter where they live in the world. This may present us with technical challenges doing it by skype or phone hookup, but we’ll give it a go.

Each week, a core team meets in central Melbourne. We are an Incorporated Association, and is governed by a committee. It will be up for election at the AGM.

Please email us if you would like to join, stating Joining JCJ in the subject line.
