    2024 Maritime Leadership Camp: Sea Scape

    We are happy to report that this year’s 5th instalment of The Floating School’s Maritime Leadership Camp went great. JCJ takes great pride in having sponsored this program for the past four years, beginning in 2020. Nestled in the stunning landscapes of South Sulawesi, this initiative has magnetised over 100 enthusiastic alums over the past five years.

    This year, the program theme was Sea Scape, and the online segment unfolded on July 27-28, 2024. The dynamic duo of Kanchana and Tony captivated the young delegates with a presentation on climate change issues in the Asia-Pacific region. They also underscored the pivotal role of youth in driving climate action and offered practical tips for getting started, empowering the young leaders to make a difference.

    The real adventure kicked off with the in-person program at Lowita Beach, Pinrang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, from August 2-4, 2024. There, 30 young individuals delved deep into Indonesia’s maritime history, immersed themselves in marine conservation efforts, and even had the incredible opportunity to release turtles into their natural habitat. The program also featured marine ecosystem and sea observations, a fulfilling beach clean-up, mangrove planting, and an engaging eco-bricks workshop. Moreover, participants honed their leadership skills through a series of empowering exercises designed to empower them to lead the charge in combating climate change.

    We are eager to see what the talents at The Floating School will make next year and are excited about the future of the Maritime Leadership Camp.

  • Making connections with The Floating School

    Natalie, Sophie, and Jack from the JCJ committee had the opportunity to meet with Nunu and Rahmat, the founders of the Floating School in South Sulawesi, during their visits to Melbourne for the Australia-Indonesia Muslim Exchange Program (AIMEP). The Floating School is the organisation that run the Maritime Leadership Camps that JCJ has supported over the last couple of years.     Both Rahmat and Nunu are very passionate about their work. They shared their ideas, thoughts and future plans, leaving us inspired by the experience!

    JCJ are grateful we were able to connect with Nunu and Rahmat and look forward to supporting their future endeavors.

  • The Floating School – Maritime Leadership Camp 2023

    JCJ are proud to report that we supported the Floating School’s Maritime Leadership Camp 2023.

    The 3-day camp ran from 11-13 August at Lowita Beach, Pinrang, South Sulawesi in Indonesia and gathered 30 young people. 2023’s theme was #BeatPlasticPollution. Participants learned about the marine ecosystem in Indonesia, cleaned up 200kg of rubbish at Lowita Beach, turned it into 22 eco-bricks, and planted mangroves. 

    For an international perspective one of our committee members Anthony Gleeson – a long term climate justice warrior – gave a presentation over zoom. He got to know the team while sharing information about climate change and the work that JCJ does.

  • Maritime Leadership Camp 2022

    Following the success of the previous year’s camp, JCJ sponsored the Floating School’s Maritime Leadership Camp 2022 in South Sulawesi. 25 college students from seven coastal communities joined the five facilitators on a weekend filled with great environmental learning and discussions.

    They managed to plant 200 mangroves, hold a plastic audit, an eco-bricks workshop, and an environmental movie night. The group reconvened in May 2023 with a turtle release that went very well. The Floating School continues to engage with and support the camp attendees.

  • 2021 Indonesian Maritime Leadership Camp

    2021 Indonesian Maritime Leadership Camp

    We are excited to announce the completion of an entirely new project that JCJ sponsored during September in Indonesia!

    This camp was run by The Floating School – an organisation that takes young professionals out to remote islands to provide more artistic, cultural & technological education classes on the weekend to young people. Exposing them to subjects they normally would not have access to.

    JCJ got in touch, and partnered with them to run their second annual ‘Maritime Leadership Camp’. It’s a 3-day training program which aims to introduce maritime issues to youth from remote islands and increase their leadership skills in taking action on those issues.
